The significance of 9/11 to New Zealand
There were two New Zealanders who were killed in the 9/11 attacks. They were John Lowzowsky and Allan Bevan.
John had lived in New Zealand for 12 years, and had dual US/NZ citizenship. He was working in the WTC and died when one of the planes crashed into the floor he was working on. Allan Had moved from New Zealand to live in the US. He was aboard flight 93 and died when it was crashed into a field in Pennsylvania by the hijackers.
The deaths of these two men made a huge impact on their families and also made the disaster a lot more of a reality to many New Zealanders.
In a tv3 news article about post 9/11 in New Zealand, it was stated that the attitudes of New Zealanders have turned hostile to Muslim people living here. They have felt discrimination, and are not made as welcome as they should be in such a peaceful country.
New Zealand also experienced similar tightening of customs and airport security that America and a lot of other countries felt was necessary.
