The significance of 9/11 to the USA
During the 9/11 attacks over 3,000 people were killed. These included people working in and around the WTC building and the Pentagon, passengers and crew on the four hijacked flights and rescuers at the WTC towers.
Airport security was tightened in America, and the rest of the world after the hijackings on 9/11. These new measures were put in place to try to prevent a similar tragedy to 9/11 ever happening again, and included:
1. ID checks became more important
2. Shoes had to be put through the screening along with carry on luggage
3. The liquid amount allowed in carry on luggage was reduced to less than 3.4 ounces
4. Items like laptops and jewellery need to be pulled out of luggage
5. Only passengers with authorised tickets are allowed aboard the plane
6. Jackets have to be taken off at the screening process
7. More 'pat' downs of potentially threatening people
8. More advanced body screening
The length of time it takes to get through the security check points at airports now require people to arrive a lot earlier than their plane is due to fly out.
Employment numbers of security officials at airports increased by about 50,000 new federal employees since the 9/11 attacks
After 9/11 the leader of al Queda, Osama Bin Laden, was blamed for the attacks. He was killed by the US Navy Seals by a shot to the head on May 2, 2011.
